Why you need to hire a social media manager

Whatever your business size you need social media. It has become a part of the marketing mix that isn’t likely to go away any time soon, even if the platforms of choice change.

Whether you use it for brand recognition, community building or direct sales, you need to maintain a presence online on whatever platform suits your industry and vertical. This much we already know.

The question that remains, and one that is asked frequently, is how can I save time while running my social media accounts and how can I keep up with the volume of posting and engagement that is required? That is where a good social media manager can be worth their weight in gold.

Social media is a massive time sucker

On average, people in the UK spend over 2.5 hours a day on social media (Statista, 2017). This figure grows year on year with 11 new people every second signing up for social media for the first time (We Are Social, 2018), demonstrating why a business needs to be on social media.

Strategy, social media content creation, video creation, posting or scheduling, and interacting with your audience and influencers, or assessing the success and growth as a business on social media all take time. A social media manager can take all of that work off your hands.

Building your business

As a business owner, you have more important areas to work on. Your time is better spent elsewhere. As in any area of a business, you should delegate tasks that it is not in the best interest of the company for you to do, and social media is one.

That doesn’t mean you can be completely hands-off as you will want to steer the direction of your social media as part of your sales strategy, but an experienced social media manager will be able to develop a strategy and work with your customers as if they were part of your in-house team.

A good social media manager will handle your customer service and prevent complaints from escalating and they will get to know your products and services so that they can answer the majority of questions quickly and efficiently.

Social media changes are constant

Social media is moving at a fast pace, your social media manager will be up to date with the latest trends and best practices.

New platforms are appearing all the time, but the major platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest and Reddit) are also constantly changing features and algorithms.

As part of an agency or network, the social media manager will be well placed to keep abreast of the latest tactics. They will make it their business to train or retrain when necessary to improve their skillset and services.

Hiring a specialist social media manager, for example with Facebook advertising experience or experience of a particular platform can optimise your campaign and provide a better return on investment.

Finding a social media manager

Look for a social media manager in the same way you would look for any service provider to your business. Decide on your business priorities; are you looking for an agency or a freelancer? Would you prefer someone local so that you can meet regularly or is this not an issue?

Do you work in a specialist industry where you need someone with direct experience? If you do, ask for references or examples of work that demonstrate previous experience or capability.

Style is important as the agency or freelancer will be the face of your company to a greater or lesser extent depending on the platform.
